I remember quite a few years ago, sea lions were spending a couple of weeks on the small rocky islands just off of the Municipality of Oak Bay. ThisI remember quite a few years ago, sea lions were spending a couple of weeks on the small rocky islands just off of the Municipality of Oak Bay. This created a bit of a stir as sea lions do not have alarm clocks and would start barking in the pre-dawn hours. This led to all sorts of letters to the editor in the local newspaper about noise from those trying to catch a few last z's. To be honest I could even hear them during my morning run, which was inland and over 5 kilometers away, but I loved the sound. The sea lions then became an event with locals and visitors driving by and the marine scenic route took on a whole new meaning. The local newspaper then had media content readily available and would have articles to advise people to keep away from the sea lions. For example, if you are taking a selfie with one that is too close! Do not leave children unattended and then there were the classic debates on the damage done to the fishing industry and articles on sea lions and marine ecology in general. It was exciting to have the sea lions so close by! It's been a number of years and I have not heard them since, I think this is because they now all hang out in Cowichan Bay as there is more salmon there! More ...
