Uplands Park is a woodland and beach park destination located in Oak Bay which is a neighborhood of Victoria, British Columbia (B.C.), Canada on Vancouver Island. The 30.6 hectare (75 acre) park was established in 1946 and is one of North America;s first natural urban parks.
The Victoria park preserve is separated into two sections - Uplands Park and Cattle Point. Cattle Point is on the water side and Uplands Park is up on the hillside. Separating the park is the main access road Beach Drive.
Uplands Park enjoys a series of walking trails, beach access points, boat ramps, memorial, cairn, sightseeing benches, scenic driving route, picnic area and parking area. There is a trail map on site for directions to all the highlights.
Uplands Park offers numerous walking trails popular for hiking and sightseeing. The gravel and dirt walking trails are considered easy going, level (not all) and suitable for most fitness levels. No bikes are permitted in the park.
Cattle Point provides beach and ocean access. Along the trails in Cattle Point are sightseeing benches and access to boat ramps. There is also a walking trail which will connect visitors to a popular beach called Willows Beach.
Uplands Park is a protected park with a vast collection of rare native plants, herbs and trees. There are native and exotic trees including Arbutus, Garry Oak, Pacific Willow, Aspen Poplar, Black Cottonwood, Douglas Fir, Chinese Yew, Woodland Hawthorn, Weeping Birch and European Ash.
The park grounds are decorated with an assortment of flora and fauna like Ocean Spray, Saskatoon Berry, Trailing Blackberry, Indian Plum, Orange Honeysuckle and Snowberry. Look closely and one can see native herbs as well like Easter Lily, Giant Horsetail, Indian Pipe, Beach Pea, Licorice Fern, Hooker's Onion, Slender Wheatgrass, Seacoast Bullrush, Dune Wild Rye, Bear's-foot Sanicle, Tall Peppergrass, Salt-marsh Sand Spurry, Wild Lily-of-the-valley and Miner's Lettuce.
Activities enjoyed in and from the park include hiking, boating, beachcombing, sightseeing, picnicking and birding. Bird sightings in Uplands Park and from Cattle Point include such species as the Eared Grebe, Red Crossbill, Rufous Hummingbird, Orange-crowned Warbler, Brown-headed Cowbird, sparrows, Black Oystercatcher, Cedar Waxwing, Violet-green Swallow, American Goldfinch, Downy Woodpecker, Spotted Towhee, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Bald Eagle, Chestnut-backed, Turkey Vulture, Chickadee and Great Blue Herons.
