The park is influenced by a railroad theme. Onsite is a few railway cars on display dedicated to the railway of old. And from the sandy beach one can see in the distance the CN Railway Bridge crossing the river.

Pioneer Park is a smaller recreation destination park in the community. The park grounds consist of a large grassy field fronting a white sandy beach looking out over the mighty Thompson River. A few viewing benches are scattered throughout the grass lawns and there are some washrooms and change rooms near the parking lot.

Pioneer Park is a popular launch point for boats and kayaks seeking to access the Thompson River. Pioneer Park enjoys a boat launch and there is a dog friendly park. The park attracts people who enjoy spending some time outdoors hiking, kayaking, biking, boating, fishing and swimming.

Pioneer Park is very near the bigger Riverside Park. Both parks are connected by the Rivers Trail. A massive paved trail system that explores the community, the surrounding parks and the neighbourhoods.
