Kootenay Lake is the largest waterway in the Kootenays of British Columbia, Canada measuring 144 kilometres long covering an area of 400 square km. At one point it measures 8 kilometres wide and 152 metres deep.
It is home to many communities including Nelson, Kaslo, Balfour, Gray Creek, Boswell, Creston, Crawford Bay, Kootenay Bay, Ainsworth Hot Springs and Johnsons Landing. In Kootenay Bay and Balfour, there is the longest free ferry crossing in the world. The 40 minute crossing connects the Trans Canada Highway.
To many people, Kootenay Lake is the adventure and activity destination of choice for canoeing, fishing, kayaking, boating, swimming, wind surfing, and SUP... not to mention the amazing photographs that come from the lake and its sunsets, sunrises, rainbows and mountains - Selkirk Mountains to the west and the Purcell Mountains to the east.
